Epidemiological Alert: Oropouche in the Region of the Americas

Situation Report - 1 August 2024

As of 16 July 2024, a total of 7688 confirmed cases of Oropouche virus infection have been reported in five countries in the Region of the Americas.

Increase in Reported Cases

Between epidemiological weeks 1 and 29 of 2024, there have been 8078 confirmed cases of Oropouche, including 54 deaths. This represents a significant increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Geographic Distribution

The majority of cases have been reported from Brazil (7080), followed by Peru (608). Cases have also been reported from Venezuela (1), Colombia (1), and Trinidad and Tobago (33).

Clinical Manifestations

The majority of cases have presented with mild symptoms, including fever, rash, headache, and muscle pain. However, severe cases have also been reported, with symptoms including encephalitis, meningitis, and multi-organ failure.

Health authorities in the affected countries are implementing surveillance and control measures to prevent further spread of the virus.
