Police allege grandfather was negligent, did not have proper supervision of child
The grandfather of an 18-month-old girl who fell to her death from a cruise ship has been charged with negligent homicide. The child, who was identified as Chloe Wiegand, was on the Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas with her family when she fell from an open window on the 11th floor on Sunday.
According to police, the grandfather, Salvatore Anello, was holding Chloe when she fell from the window. Anello told police that he had been playing with Chloe and had not realized that the window was open. However, police say that there were clear signs that the window had been open for some time, and that Anello should have known.
Anello has been charged with negligent homicide. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison. The child's family has expressed shock and grief over her death, and has said that they are cooperating with the investigation.
