Illinois Department of Revenue Provides Taxpayers with Tips to Prepare for Next Years Tax Season
Form IL-505-I Automatic Extension Payment
The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) reminds taxpayers that the original due date to file and pay Illinois individual income tax for calendar year filers is April 15, 2024. Taxpayers who are unable to file their return by the due date can request an automatic six-month extension of time to file using Form IL-505-I, Automatic Extension Payment.
Filing an Extension
To file an extension, taxpayers must complete Form IL-505-I and submit it to IDOR by April 15, 2024. The extension does not grant taxpayers additional time to pay any taxes due. Taxpayers are still required to estimate their tax liability and make a payment with their extension request. Any unpaid tax is subject to interest and penalty charges.
Making Estimated Tax Payments
Taxpayers who expect to owe more than $1,000 in taxes when they file their return should make estimated tax payments. Estimated tax payments are due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year. Taxpayers can make estimated tax payments online at IDOR's website or by mail using Form IL-1040-ES, Illinois Estimated Income Tax Payment Voucher.
Other Important Dates
In addition to the April 15 filing deadline, taxpayers should be aware of the following important dates:
- January 23, 2024: First day to file electronically
- April 18, 2024: Last day to file paper returns
- April 15, 2025: Due date for 2024 estimated tax payments
