Grandfather Charged in Royal Caribbean Cruise Death
Pleads Not Guilty in Granddaughter's Death
The grandfather of an 18-month-old Chloe Wiegand who fell to her death from the open window of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in 2019 has pleaded not guilty to negligent homicide.
Salvatore Anello, 51, entered the plea during a brief hearing Tuesday in federal court in Puerto Rico. He is charged with one count of negligent homicide in the death of his granddaughter, Chloe Wiegand.
Chloe died in July 2019 after falling from an open window on the 11th floor of the Royal Caribbean ship Freedom of the Seas while it was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Anello was holding Chloe at the time she fell. The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of Royal Caribbean for not having proper window safety measures in place. A federal appeals court on Tuesday revived a lawsuit against Royal Caribbean Cruises.
The lawsuit, which was filed by Chloe's parents, alleges that Royal Caribbean Cruises was negligent in failing to properly maintain the window and in not warning passengers about the danger of open windows.
The court ruled that the lawsuit can proceed, reversing a lower court ruling that had dismissed the case. The court found that the plaintiffs had sufficiently alleged that Royal Caribbean Cruises was negligent and that its negligence caused Chloe's death.
